Dress rehearsal for World War III

In the summer of 1987, I accompanied the 194th Armored Brigade to fight he Russians in the Mojave Desert.

The brigade was stationed at Fort Knox in Kentucky. Trip to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin in California was part of the Army's reinvigorated training program that let its tank brigades test their battlefield skills against the Opfor, the home team forces that studied and used the tactics of the Soviet military.

My story and Pam Spaulding's photos appeared in the Courier-Journal's Sunday Magazine on June 14, 1987.
